On-line Reader’s Group to Explore The Warmth of Other Suns  

John Steinbeck’s novel, The Grapes of Wrath, is familiar to many high school students, with its gripping story of Oklahoma tenant farmers migrating to California during the Great Depression. But few know of a much greater migration—the nearly six million black citizens who from 1915 to 1970 fled Jim Crow laws in the South to seek greater opportunity and freedom in the cities of the north and west. 

Isabel Wilkerson, the first black woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize in journalism, tells the story of this epic Great Migration by tracing the lives of three individuals in moving detail, interspersed with the historical context of the time. Tom Brokaw describes her work as “an epic for all Americans who want to understand the making of our modern nation.”  

Registration is open for an on-line Zoom reader’s group that will explore Wilkerson’s book in four Tuesday evening sessions, 7:00 to 8:30, July 6, July 20, August 3, and August 17. Sessions will feature a combination of presentations and small group explorations. There is no charge for the series, but registration is required.
